It’s Ugly Sweater Day this week on Business Over Beer and deranged elf Brian Shields stops by the podcast. Brian talks to us about how he went from living in his Ford Bronco while he finished high school, to being able to help families with their biggest financial decision through his mortgage brokerage. And probably gets a little too personal about his multiple vasectomies. Hang onto your hats…”We’ll sell you the whole seat but you’ll only need the edge”…this one’s a doozy.
Guest Beer #1: Heathen Brewing, collaboration with Brothers Cascadia – Vancouver, WA Märzen Invaders, 5.3% ABV, 20 IBU
“Brewed on the 7th Anniversary of the Curiosity landing on Mars, this malty German Style Märzen was brewed in collaboration with Brothers Cascadia Brewing.”
Guest Beer #2: Heathen Brewing – Vancouver, WA Reindeer Tears 2017, Barleywine, 12% ABV, 94 IBU
“There won’t be any reindeer games around Santa’s workshop this year. The jolly old man has gone rogue, collecting tears for this inaugural bourbon barrel-aged barley wine release. The deranged elves were hard at work throughout the summer months crafting this seasonal holiday ale for your enjoyment. Don’t bother trying to make the nice list. You’re sure to get coal in your stocking for this one.”
Angie’s Mystery Beer: Melvin Brewing – Jackson, WY Drunken Master, IIPA, 9% ABV, 75 IBU
“Born out of the Melvin R&D facility on Wyoming’s West Coast, also known as the closet. Brewed with a blend of Columbus, Citra and some Top-Secret hops left over from the great east vs. west hip hop battles. Hopped with over 3 pounds per barrel. Drunken Master is the 2016 National IlPA Champion. Sure to make you a Drunken Master if you consume too many of these bad boys. Cheers from the crew at Melvin. Please, only practice your Karate after a four pack and bow to your sensei.”
This week’s episode of Business Over Beer comes to you live from Fortside Brewing. In this dual interview special, we first talk to Fortside beer ambassador Elliott Sutherland, who not only sells beer, but works to strengthen beer culture throughout the Pacific Northwest. Second we meet Nichole Davidson the Captain of the Taco Spaceship, and we learn about her taco genius and the amazing partnership between the beer business and the taco business.
Guest Beer #1: Fortside Brewing – Vancouver, WA Palisade #2, Specialty Saison, 6.2% ABV, 22 IBU
“Fortside’s second Palisade series of beer is a mix of the earthly and the heavenly, of wild and rural places with holy and peaceful places. A showcase of two traditional and quite elegant Trappist yeast strains, heavy in both fruity esters and spicy phenolics, interplaying with the earthy, funky, and grounded notes of farmhouse yeasts and brettanomyces. A full and satiating mouthfeel is offered from the oak barrels used throughout fermentation and conditioning, along with some balancing tannic notes. Spicy, zesty, and unendingly complex.”
Guest Beer #2: Fortside Brewing – Vancouver, WA Orange Whip, New England IPA, 5.9% ABV, 60 IBU
“No fruit was harmed in the making of this “Juicy” IPA. In fact, there is no “juice” in this IPA. Rather, it is a real IPA that benefits from heaps of El Dorado and Mosaic Hops which give it succulent aromas and flavors of orange, tangerine and grapefruit.” Who wants an orange whip?
Angie’s Mystery Beer:
Ben’s Dad’s Home Brewing – Vancouver, WA
Angie’s Dark Angel
Very smooth oatmeal stout brewed with Belgian yeast strains and pecans. You will just have to take our word for it…it was delicious!
It’s just screen printing….or is it. There is so much more to Dave Plaza than meets the eye. We learn about the challenges he overcame early on in his life to become a successful United States Marine, Law Enforcement Officer and now as Owner of Fire Pigs Designs.
Guest Beer: Stone Brewing – Escondido, CA Arrogant Bastard Ale, 7.2% ABV
“We believe that pandering to the lowest common denominator represents the height of tyranny—a virtual form of keeping the consumer barefoot and stupid. Brought forth upon an unsuspecting public in 1997, Arrogant Bastard Ale openly challenged the tyrannical overlords who were brazenly attempting to keep Americans chained in the shackles of poor taste. Since the very beginning, Arrogant Bastard Ale has reveled in its unprecedented and uncompromising celebration of intensity.”
Angie’s Mystery Beer: Stone Brewing – Escondido, CA Xocoveza, Imperial Stout, 8.1% Abv, 50 IBU
“First introduced as a limited special collaboration release with San Diego homebrewer Chris Banker (after his recipe won our annual homebrew competition) and Cerveceria Insurgente, it was an instant hit and fans began clamoring for its return. Seeing as how its amazing flavor profile is evocative of Mexican hot chocolate, featuring coffee, pasilla peppers, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and a generous amount of chocolate, we concluded it was the perfect stout to re-release in celebration of the Holidays and the entire winter season.”
John Bentley, Co-Founder and Head of Marketing for The International TEFL Academy stops by this week to talk about how growing up overseas paved the way for a life and profession of international travel and how his company helps others achieve their dream of living abroad by teaching English as a foreign language all over the world.
Guest Beer: Tiger Brewery – Singapore
Tiger Asian Lager, 3890 Tigers, 5% ABV, 18 IBU
“Brewed in Singapore since 1932, Tiger Beer is a full-flavored, pilsner-style golden lager with a slightly sweet note and amazingly clean finish. 2010 World Beer Cup Gold Medal (international style lager).”
Angie’s Mystery Beer: Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB) – Portland, OR Ace of Spades, Imperial IPA, 8.6% ABV – The Sequel
“NW hops added at every stage of the brewing process: mash tun, first wort, kettle, hop back and dry-hop. Big citrus and resinous hop aromas and flavors. Clean, crisp bitter finish.”
Real Estate investor Matthew Lambright joins us on the Pacific Northwest’s second biggest podcast and talk to us about his journey from a small town in Indiana, his stint in the military and ultimately landing in Portland where he has built several unique real estate related businesses.
Guest Beer: Ninkasi Brewing Co. – Eugene, OR Total Domination Northwest IPA, 6.7% ABV, 81 IBU
“The Willamette National Forest, our brewery’s backyard, is notorious for Bigfoot sightings. We’ve yet to see one, but if we did we’d offer it a Total Dom, a wild IPA that hits you like a mountain thunderstorm. It’s a sweet, piney hops encounter you won’t forget. Real or not, it’s good to know that if Bigfoot does exist, this is where it would call home.
Total Domination IPA has a citrusy, floral hop aroma, and big hop flavor balanced with a richness imparted by Carahell and Munich malts. This beer is a big, flavorful Northwest IPA that maintains its drinkability, and as such, has garnered great admiration from the novice craft drinker and the seasoned hop-head alike.”
On the podcast this week, Teresa Nunez of Nunez Photography stops by. We learned that being a pro photographer is way more than just taking beautiful pictures. It’s just as much about understanding your clients core values and being able to effectively tell their story through visuals.
Just like most industries, Teresa is in the people business: “No matter what the business is, there’s people that run it.”
We had some technical difficulties with the guest beer, it had a cork and unfortunately we were short a corkscrew. The good thing was Jonathan came through with a hack to get that cork out of there. The bad thing was, despite Knopp telling him to stop, he went a skosh too far and cause a “little” spill. (Yeah and Mt. Vesuvius was a “little” eruption.)
Guest Beer: Lindemans – Belgium Frambois, 2.5% ABV
“The appearance of this exceptional beer is matched only by its taste! To make our Framboise, we add raspberry juice to our lambic. That gives it a delicate fruity aroma and a beautiful dark pink colour. Framboise is served as an aperitif, but also is used in cooking. Powerful raspberry aromas with a hint of caramel and a slightly sour finish characteristic of lambic beers.”
P.S. And it stains furniture….
Angie’s Mystery Beer: Hop Valley Brewing – Eugene, OR Alpha Centauri, 9% ABV, 100 IBU
“Big flavor, intense pine and citrus aromas dominate this brew. We keep the malt profile clean in this Imperial IPA to let the love lights shine on the fine NW hops.” Hops: Nugget, Cascade, Centennial, Simcoe, Citra, Amaril Malts: 2 Row, Munich
