‘Twas the night before the 2nd Lockdown
And all through the city
There were very few laughs and to be blunt
The whole situation made me feel sh**ty
This will be the last Thirsty Thursday
At least in person for a while
It’s a challenge to stay positive
Even to produce a simple smile.
The children were finished
Being homeschooled for the day
With thoughts of Baby Yoda and the Mandalorian saying
“This is the way”
I mustered through my sorrow
With my wallet in hand
Because having negative attitude
Is simply pounding the sand
I hopped in my car and began to drive
As I thought to myself, “What a time to be alive”
A global pandemic and too many people fighting
Much like the Chicago Bears Offense, 2020 has not been very exciting.
I arrived to Tap Union Freehouse and opened the door
The smell of food goodness had my nose lusting for more
I saw Jonathan at the counter, smiling from ear to ear
As he said those six magic words, “Can I buy you a beer?”
I accepted his gesture and then we headed upstairs,
where my good friend Gretchen was waiting and had saved us some chairs
I introduced Jonathan, then Knopp and our friend Val;
“Everyone this is Gretchen she is the Corporate Chef for McMenamins and a longtime pal.”
We all toasted to friendship, business and good health
And as we did, I felt some hope growing inside of myself
Gretchen ordered from the menu, a meat and cheese plate
While Val ordered the pork tacos, I was pissed that I already ate
I ordered another Hazy IPA
From Mt Tabor Brewing I believe
Jonathan ordered the Backwoods Brewing Company Mosaic Pale Ale
“That’s my jam” he said, rolling up his sleeves
Before we departed Knopp shouted, “Stop!
We have to get something from their awesome bottle shop.”
We each grabbed a six pack and then said our “goodbyes”
I must admit doing so almost brought tears to my eyes
As I made way back walking slowly to my car
I stopped in front of a church and looked up at the stars
I realized right there, that though this feels like forever
We truly need to have each other’s back because we are indeed In This Together.
